In April 2009, the Shanghai-based art collective, Birdhead responded to the dire effects the recent economic crisis had on the Chinese contemporary art scene. As artists who rely on the existing economic channels for art production and dissemination, such as commercial sales, auctions, and fairs, Birdhead focused on creating new relationships within these systems, redefining their role in this current economic climate.

So Birdhead began a project called "BAGART" (Birdhead Affordable Game Art). Hosting Shanghai-based collective Birdhead's project launch in Toronto is aligned with Gendai's new directions in experimental collaborations with contemporary artists and organizations for the production and dissemination of artwork from East Asian perspectives.
